The California Land Conservancy has conducted its activities primarily within Southern California. Most of the conservation in these counties is conducted by government organizations and CLC provides a facilitation role where ownership of fee title or conservation easements by a nELSINOREon-profit entity is not necessary. Examples of CLC’s facilitation are described below.
The Trabuco Canyon area of Orange County provides an essential linkage between the Irvine Company's sponsored Central Orange County Natural Communities Conservation Plan and lands conserved in the South Orange County Habitat Conservation Plan.
CLC presented the Environmental Oversight Committee of the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) a study on conservation priorities for Orange County that encouraged acquisition of lands in Trabuco Canyon as part of OCTA's funding and permit mitigation program. Several lands were preserved because of CLC's efforts including the Hafen Reserve, a 149-acre property with Coastal Sage Scrub, Oak Woodland and riparian habitat. The first Hafen Reserve acreage was acquired by the State of California by approval of the Wildlife Conservation Board in two phases and by OCTA for the last acquisition of 48 acres. CLC supported this conservation and retained a remainder parcel of disturbed habitat and California Oak Woodland which was deeded to a local non-profit entity in 2018. CLC continues to support conservation in this strategically critical area.
When a significant population of Tri-Colored Blackbirds nested in agricultural crops that were to be harvested before fledglings could mature and wildlife laws could not provide protection, CLC provided funding and conducted fundraising events to help compensate the farmer for damages to his crop.
CLC collaborates with statewide coalitions, government agencies, NGOs and private organizations who support funding for multispecies planning and conservation efforts throughout California.
CLC provided funding in the Spring of 2013 to initiate vernal pool and species surveys as needed to facilitate a 900+ acre preserve in a cooperative effort with the City of Hemet, Western Riverside County Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan Regional Conservation Authority (RCA) and affected landowners. CLC continues to support completion of this reserve system by working with local, state and federal agencies to fund the land acquisitions to complete this vernal pool complex.
